About Us

Who We Are and How We Got Here

Isla Animals is made up of volunteers, local residents, medical staff, supporters, visitors, community members and all of you that show up for those that need it the most.

The rescue began informally in 2000. As tourism grew and street dogs were seen as a problem, Isla Animals started offering free spay and neuter services, and rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming puppies. It worked. Within a few years, the wild street dog population had been significantly reduced.

From 2000 to 2013, Alison’s home became the unofficial humane society for Isla Mujeres. The rescue was registered as a non-profit in Colorado in 2009, and in 2015 a shelter space was provided by the local government.

In 2023, that space was reclaimed, and Isla Animals was evicted. With no affordable options left on the island, and rising property costs making relocation impossible, we faced a hard reality: move, or disappear. When one of our directors offered land in Cancún, Oasis was born—not by choice, but by necessity.

The eviction was intended to eliminate Isla Animals and replace our work with a pound—something fundamentally different from what we do. But while buildings stalled, our work didn’t.

Sterilisations, education, deworming campaigns, and years of community involvement have had lasting effects. That’s why the island hasn’t been overrun again. The impact stuck and we continued offering free sterilizations and rescuing dogs when needed.

Alison’s legacy lives on—in the systems she built, the animals saved, and the standards she set. Isla Animals continues to work independently, thanks to raw passion and the belief of many in what we do and what we ca do.

Alison has been recognised for her work with awards and international media coverage, but the real legacy is simpler than that—fewer animals suffering, and a community changed for good.

Our Mission

To provide free spay/neuter clinics to help control the animal population.

To provide free or reduced-cost veterinary services and vaccinations.

To rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals promoting adoptions in Mexico, the USA and Canada.

To educate pet owners about humane animal treatment, care and responsibility.

And to do all of the above in the most humane, compassionate way possible.

Meet our team

Alison Sawyer Current started Isla Animals Rescue at her home on Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Since the year 2000 she has organized spay & neuter campaigns, recruited volunteers, promoted government involvement, and pushed for vaccinations, education and wellness care.

Trina Noakes is the owner and operator of CARM.  Her energy and dedication to Isla Animals has made her the partner that Alison has always needed.  She also donates her vans and drivers to take every dog that we rehome to the airport.

Dr. Arturo Dzul Leon is the official veterinarian for Isla Animals.  His medical skills are unsurpassed and his love for the animals and generous spirit make him our all-time favorite animal doctor.

Ceci Knopfler is officially the adoptions’ coordinator who deals with the logistics of dogs going from Isla to their FURever homes, and, unofficially, the do-it-all girl. She has been running the day-to-day life of the rescue since 2020 and with the support of many amazing people has managed to keep it alive and make it into something new!

Sabrina is our fabulous vet tech & rescue expert with whom Isla Animals most likely wouldn’t have had a chance given all the challenges of 2023. She came right at the time we got evicted and from day one was a pillar of Isla Animals, taking the responsibility of building a future for our rescue. We couldn’t have done it without her!

Fer started working at Isla Animals Oasis in September and she has proven to be an invaluable part of our shelter. She takes care of the dogs, feeds them, medicates them and makes sure the place is clean and working 100%. Fer truly loves the animals and it shows on everything she does!

Oto was among the workers that helped us transform Oasis from a drawing into a living reality. He loves the dogs and helps with everything and anything we need at the shelter. A truly invaluable member of our team!
